What A Waste, an initiative of the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), is your university; it was created with you in mind. Whether you work in a senior nutrition program, senior center, assisted living facility, nursing home, adult day center, or a health care facility and you have oversight of, serve, prepare, or focus on the nutritional needs of vulnerable adults, this is the university for you. What A Waste University, or WAWU, is specifically designed for individual and organizational transformation.
Mastering new skills formulated around our three pillars of nutrition, waste and sustainability will give you and your organization the tools and acumen to gain a more competitive position in this evolving world of limited staff and limited monetary resources. You will learn not only to plan strategically for the future but also to think strategically for the present.
We will introduce you to venture strategies to control costs by controlling food waste and to create new channels of organizational and personal opportunity for growth by using analytics and metrics in a novel and creative way to make purchasing decisions and nutrition decisions that will have a direct impact on your bottom line and the health and well-being of your clients.
We will explore new strategies for turning food waste and wasted food into pathways to program sustainability. We have the tools to teach you about square-foot gardening with composted soil from your organization’s own food waste and also about involving your seniors in therapy gardening that we call Growing: Older.
We will peruse and then explore more fully the positive environmental impact your organization can and must pursue in order to enable a healthier community.
We will define organizational long-term objectives and utilize unique analyses to help you develop a strategic execution road map with the goals of ending waste, managing and improving proper nutrient intake, becoming financially and environmentally sustainable, and engaging your senior clients, who are able, to enjoy the healthy activity of horticultural therapy.
WAWU is a university that puts learning into practice. It’s a hands-on experience with rewards that are ongoing.
Our What A Waste University is transportable or stationary. That is, you can learn virtually through this website. That is one option. Here are others. We can “take our show” on the road if there are enough students or you can join us here in Washington, DC, at our “campus.” For more information about enrolling in WAWU or having us come to your state/city/region, please call us at NFESH at 571-312-2675. Let’s talk.
